Show Me What I’m Looking For

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
― C.S. Lewis

We may not consider ourselves physically blind, but with all the distractions around us, we sometimes miss what we’re most meant to see.

How could that be possible? Well, it’s easy. See if you can count how many times the white team passes the ball in this 60-second video.

The video first asked us to count the number of passes, but then it asked if we saw the bear. This brings about a question: How do we always know what we’re looking for?

We want to live good lives, and maybe we feel called to do something big, something purposeful… but the “something” isn’t always clear. The “someone” isn’t always clear. The “how” isn’t always clear.

We can pray about it and ask God for help. The prayer can be as short as this one line: Please God, show me what I’m looking for.

What are You Looking For?

Even with 20/20 vision, we can suffer from blindness. Our walk with God takes time — a lifetime. We can think up plans, set goals and make decisions, but without staying open to God’s guidance, without asking what God wants for our lives, we could end up walking in circles, repeating patterns and getting lost. Let’s stay flexible and practice patience as He unravels the truth. Let’s have the courage to put aside what we want and ask God what He wants.

Jesus heals the blind. When you ask to see, believe that the work is already underway. Like Mark 8:23-25 tells us:

So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.” Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly.

Have you ever listened to that song “Show Me What I’m Looking For,” by Carolina Liar? Here are the lyrics. Wow, if these don’t sum it up…

Wait, I’m wrong
Should have done better than this
Please, I’ll be strong
I’m finding it hard to resist
So show me what I’m looking for

CHORUS
Save me, I’m lost
Oh Lord, I’ve been waiting for you
I’ll pay any cost
Save me from being confused
Show me what I’m looking for
Show me what I’m looking for…oh Lord

Don’t let go
I’ve wanted this far too long
Mistakes become regrets
I’ve learned to love abuse
Please show me what I’m looking for

CHORUS
Save me, I’m lost
Oh Lord, I’ve been waiting for you
I’ll pay any cost
Save me from being confused
Show me what I’m looking for
Show me what I’m looking for…oh Lord

Amen!
